NANNP Accomplishments

  • Created and instructed first-ever neonatal procedural skills lab at NANN's annual educational conference. The skills lab enabled attendees to learn and practice the placement of percutaneous and standard chest tubes and umbilical lines and methods for preparing and performing an exchange transfusion using a fetal pig.
  • Developed first product Resource Guide for the Use of High-Frequency Jet and Oscillatory Ventilation in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, along with a companion quick guide. The guides assist practitioners in making ventilator changes based on disease process, radiological findings, and blood-gas parameters.
  • Established an annual faculty summit at NANN's annual educational conference to bring together neonatal advanced pratice nurses and faculty.
  • Developed liaison roles with the National Council of State Boards of Nursing and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). NANNP's membership in AANP provides NANNP members with a reduction in AANP dues. Other benefits are consultation on practice and legislative concerns, the efforts of a nurse practitioner lobbyist in Washington, DC, and eligibility for NANNP members to apply for a health policy leadership fellowship.
  • Published Requirements for Advanced Neonatal Nursing Practice in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
  • Wrote letters to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing introducing NANNP and explaining why NNPs should hold leadership positions at the state board level.
  • Wrote letters to the six state boards of nursing that do not allow NNPs to prescribe Schedule II drugs in a critical care unit requesting that they expand the pharmaceutical practice in that state to improve the control of pain in critically ill neonates.
    • Initiated grassroots campaign in which NANNP members in those states were asked to send follow-up letters to encourage their state board to change practice to improve care and outcomes for these critically ill infants.
  • Formed joint NANNP and NANN Health Policy and Advocacy Committee to monitor and address legislative and regulatory issues affecting neonatal nursing.
  • Represented neonatal nursing issues by participating in the Nurses in Washington Internship (NIWI) Program.
  • Worked with the Americans for Nursing Shortage Relief on a consensus document regarding requests to Congress for the inclusion of funding for 2010 nursing workforce development programs in the economic stimulus package and for support of appropriations for nursing funding.
  • Completed first national NNP member demographic survey.
  • Published NANNP Position Statement on Doctor of Nursing (DNP) Degree
  • Published Understanding the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP): Evolution, Perceived Benefits and Challenges
  • Established an annul award to recognize an NNP who exemplifies excellence in practice, education, leadership, and service
