armstrongNANN's Challenge: Finding and Using Our Voice to Make a Difference
Lori Armstrong, MSN RN, NANN President

It is my pleasure to pen this article for the inaugural issue of NANN E-News. In an effort to communicate more frequently and effectively with our members, NANN will be publishing an electronic newsletter in alternate months. This e-newsletter will supplement the NANN Central news poster that you now receive three times per year and the bimonthly Advances in Neonatal Care (ANC), NANN's official journal, in bringing you vital news that supports you in your daily practice.

As most of you know, we have just begun celebrating NANN's 25th anniversary. We are looking forward to interviews in ANC with NANN's founders and an exciting anniversary celebration at the annual educational conference in Austin, TX, in September. With the recent downturn in the global economy, it is even more important for us to seize on these opportunities for celebration. At the same time, we are all taking a step back personally and professionally to reflect on what is important and to change course if necessary.

The NANN board met in February and did just that. After much thought and discussion, we re-evaluated the 2009 strategic plan. Although our focus on education, advocacy, research, and member engagement remains, we have reprioritized project timelines and are concentrating on the activities that are closest to NANN's core mission.

Two things happened at the board's February meeting. First and foremost, after discussing ways to strengthen the strategic plan, the NANN board found its voice. Leadership author and researcher Stephen R. Covey believes that only by finding one's own voice can a person inspire others to find theirs. When we engage in work that taps our talent and fuels our passion, in work that meets a great need in the world that we feel drawn by conscience to meet, therein lies our voice, our calling, our soul's code (Covey, 2004). You may not have heard our voice ringing out from NANN's home office in Chicago in early February, but you certainly will hear (and see) it in everything that we accomplish in 2009-2010. What we are saying (perhaps yelling) is this: NANN is the only nonprofit professional nursing association that is exclusively dedicated to neonatal nurses and to the patients and families in their care. We have found our voice, and our goal is to use this voice to inspire others to find theirs.

Second, we realized NANN's tremendous potential. We have more members than ever and more members than ever reaching out to volunteer. Through the hard work, loyalty, and commitment of our members, we will be able to achieve our goals despite the hard times we face.

Recent statistics published in January 2009 by the March of Dimes revealed that preterm birth rates in the United States continue to rise. According to the National Center for Health Statistics report Births: Final Data for 2006, the nation's preterm birth rate rose to 12.8 percent in 2006, a 36% increase from the rate in the early 1980s, putting more infants than ever at increased risk of death and disability.

We in neonatal nursing have a role in reversing this two-decade-long increase in infant morbidity and mortality. Some may ask, What can I do that would make such an impact? But you already make a difference: one patient at a time, one orientee at a time, or one classroom at a time. All these efforts have ripple effects on the care that we as neonatal nurses deliver. You will have a chance this year to volunteer for NANN in multiple ways. You can
  • work on a position statement
  • edit a publication
  • write an article for NANN Central
  • submit a manuscript to ANC
  • apply for one of many scholarships
  • attend the conference in Austin, TX
  • attend your local chapter meeting
  • start a new chapter
  • join NANNP if you are a neonatal nurse practitioner.
This list goes on and on. If you are a NANN member, encourage a nonmember to join. Together we will have a bigger and stronger voice--a voice that can help to change those statistics.

It is up to all of us to make the beginning of NANN's 25th year the beginning of how we (NANN) make a positive impact on the outcomes of every patient that we care for and the families that they are born into.

You assumed enormous responsibility when you became a nurse. You assumed even more responsibility by choosing to specialize in caring for neonates, the most vulnerable of populations. You are their voice. At times you are the voice of their families. Join NANN, and together we will be the voice that shapes neonatal nursing for the next 25 years. And it is my hope that in the year 2034 we are able to demonstrate through research a steady and sustainable decline in preterm births and in the morbidity and mortality of infants throughout the United States.

Your Association in Action

advocacy
NANN has identified advocacy as one of four major goals for the association (the other three are education; research and translation; and membership engagement). In order to make an impact on neonatal nursing practice regulation and policy, NANN will increase opportunities to collaborate with other healthcare-related groups that influence neonatal practice. See, for an example, the letter from a coalition of nursing organizations (including NANN and NANNP) that advocated successfully for the inclusion of $200 million in funding for nursing and healthcare initiatives in the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act recently signed into law by President Obama.

NANN'S Awards Program

Is there someone in your workplace who has inspired you, perhaps daily, to be all that you can be? Is there a person who mentors you or sets the bar for standards for high-quality patient care? What colleague of yours deserves peer recognition for enthusiasm, knowledge, or a willingness to give unselfishly of his or her time? Maybe your chapter deserves recognition for its efforts to raise money for a March of Dimes walk, to host a conference, or to conduct a membership drive.

If you have answered yes to any of these questions, please take time to nominate a deserving colleague or your chapter and take pride in knowing that award recipients bring honor to our profession. Start thinking now about nominees for the awards listed below:
  • Robyn Main Excellence in Clinical Practice Award: Any NANN member can nominate someone who exemplifies excellence in direct patient care. (This award is sponsored by Draeger Medical, Inc.)
  • Leadership Award: Open to any NANN member in a leadership role, this award recognizes excellence in leadership.
  • Navigator Award: The Navigator Award is given to a NANN member who consistently demonstrates the power of mentoring as a force for decreasing turnover rates, fostering camaraderie, and furthering the positive growth and development of new nurses in the specialty of neonatal nursing.
  • Chapter of the Year and Individual Chapter Project Awards: Chapters self-nominate, so don't be modest! The Chapter of the Year Award, which recognizes a group's overall accomplishments, is given to one chapter. Five Individual Chapter Project Awards are offered for excellence in chapter communications, community service, educational offerings, fund-raising, and membership recruitment and retention.
The submission deadline is June 1, 2009. Don't miss your chance to honor a colleague or your chapter!
NANN Celebrates 25 Years of Caring for Neonates

First NANN BoardNANN celebrates its 25th year of caring for neonates and their families in 2009 with a special Web site section and several unique events scheduled at its 25th Annual Educational Conference, "The Neonatal Community: Creating the Silver Lining," to be held September 23-26, 2009, in Austin, TX. Throughout 2009, NANN will be highlighting past conferences and presidents, its numerous publications, and its continued efforts to build a stronger organization. A ceremony is planned to honor founding members and past NANN presidents at the conference in September.

"We look forward to celebrating our 25th year of caring in 2009. As the year progresses, we will continue to focus on and progress in our four strategic growth areas: education, research, advocacy, and member engagement," said Lori Armstrong, NANN president.

Throughout the year, NANN will examine the evolution of neonatal care in many areas, including ethics, transport, and resuscitation. Advances in Neonatal Care, NANN's official journal, will feature the organization's 25th anniversary in upcoming issues.

As part of the celebration, NANN is asking its longtime members to forward photos of chapter meetings, conferences, or neonatal nursing practice, including equipment and nurses on the job, from the past 25 years to the NANN National Office, 4700 W. Family Teaching Toolbox Series Offered Free to Members

Teaching Toolbox

Providing education and communicating complex healthcare information to parents is a challenge that neonatal nurses face daily. The healthy outcome of the NICU infant is affected by the parents' ability to take what you teach and apply it to their infant's care. NICU nurses are adept at providing coaching and modeling caregiving, but written materials can be useful in reinforcing bedside teaching.

Articles in NANN's Family Teaching Toolbox are easy for parents to read and understand. Use them to complement your parent education at the bedside and beyond. Now available free to NANN members, the materials can help you meet the Joint Commission standards for patient education by making customized collections of selected tools for families. Materials can be kept in binders for unit education and reference. The Family Teaching Toolbox offers 25 illustrated guides intended to assist parents in caring for a newborn and to reinforce bedside teaching. Presented in an easy-to-read take-home format, each article in the series highlights a different topic among those most commonly addressed with parents by NICU nurses. This valuable resource is now available free to NANN members on our Web site and for a reasonable charge to nonmembers.
