Frequently Asked Questions about Foundations of Neonatal Care

What is the difference between Foundations and other orientation programs?
Foundations is targeted to the care of the pre-term or ill newborn.  It includes teaching toolboxes and competencies that other programs do not feature.

What are teaching toolboxes?
Teaching toolboxes are a reference to common procedures or nursing care in the NICU.  A validation competency is included for your records and can be used as an orientation or yearly competency.

Is there a specific order to the presentations?
There are ten slideshow modules and accompanying lecturer notes in this program. The module content varies but the layout is organized as: anatomy and physiology, embryology, diagnostic, conditions, nursing notes, and case studies. The order of presentations is best when adapted to the clinical relevance of assignments. The modules are not interdependent and suggested guidelines are in the timeline for orientation tool. Each presentation is between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours depending on the lecturer and discussion.

How does the preceptor use Evaluation Tools?
An evaluation tool in used to monitor orientee and preceptor progress which can be used as needed or on a routine basis such as initial, midpoint, and final evaluations.
