Guidelines

Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters: Guidelines for Practice, 2nd Edition
By Janet Pettit, MSN RNC NNP CNS, and Mary Mason Wyckhoff, PhD ARNP BC CCNS CCRN NNP

As the use of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) in infants continues to proliferate, guidelines such as this one are needed to support nursing practice and promote the safety of this vulnerable patient population. This guideline, the only one specifically targeted to infants, does that on several fronts: It defines criteria for educational competencies for nurses inserting and maintaining PICCs, and presents criteria used to select infants and techniques for inserting a catheter. Other topics include indentifying and managing complications and learning strategies for daily maintenance.

Pain Assessment and Management, Guideline for Practice, 2nd Edition
By Marlene Walden, PhD RNC NNP CCNS, and Sharyn Gibbins, PhD RN

This guideline is an outline of pain assessment and management practices that are accepted and documented by experts in neonatal care, and are based on best evidence for infant nursing care. Although broad in scope, this guideline provides a foundation for specific nursing protocols, policies, and procedures that were developed by individual institutions. The guideline was written in response to NANN members’ requests.
