Frequently Asked Questions about Navigator: Mentoring Resources

How did this program begin?
Navigator was originally piloted in 2003 in the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) neonatal intensive care unit. Today, this program is offered to support all Novice nurses in the institution.

Does this program replace orientation?
This program is not intended to substitute for a clinical orientation and preceptorship for Novice nurses. This program should be used in conjunction with a clinical orientation and preceptorship to support Novice nurses’ interpersonal skills development and assimilation into the unit beyond the orientation period.

What makes this program different?
Navigator pairs new nurses with mentors that have been in the unit for 18-24 months.  These mentors are seasoned in the ways of the unit, yet still remember what it was like to be a new hire.
